I need assistance with setting up my security camera system. Where do I start?
Updated: 10th December, 2025
If you’re setting up your new security camera system, there are a few things to consider, including specifics of the device and the placement.
General information
Each security system is a little different. This is great for buying one tailored to your needs, but it can also mean that the setup is slightly different. We recommend referring to the manual if one was included, for helpful information about your security system. Additionally, most manufacturers also have information on their websites, including manuals and instructional videos.
Now that you can find and access the all-important information for setup, let’s take a look at what is required for it. DVRs require a standalone monitor (not connected to a computer) or a television between 19”-40” with a native resolution of 1080p. For initial DVR setup, notebook computers cannot be used.
Placement
Wherever you choose to position your security camera system, it is crucial that the area provides the necessary requirements. All security systems must have an internet connection for Remote Access to work. Moreover, a minimum bandwidth is essential for an optimal user experience. Because this varies by product, you’ll want to check the manual for more information.
Now that you know what’s required for the positioning, here are the best places to input your security system and the benefits of it.
Primary entryways
The best place to install a security camera system is at the main entrance to the property. This is where a house experiences the most traffic, including friends knocking at the door and deliveries.
If the entrance has a porch or steps, install the camera slightly higher to ensure that the surrounding area is visible. Ensure there is a clear view of the approaching path. If the path curves around to one side, place the camera as best you can to cover as much of the corner as possible. This ensures better visibility of people approaching and therefore adds additional safety.
Flats
Due to shared entrances and different building layouts, installation may vary. When installing a security system, always consider the coverage.
If the entrance is an individual door, follow the same guidelines for houses and primary entryways. It may be worth considering positioning the camera at your personal door, rather than the main entrance. Consider the angle of approach and install the camera on your door frame in that direction.
If it is a shared entrance, seek permission from the building management before installation. Position the camera effectively to cover the area without infringing on others’ privacy.
Additional locations
You may wish to cover other areas of your property.
These may include:
- additional entry points, such as side entrances
- gardens, including sheds that store valuables
- detached buildings, such as garages or small businesses next to the property
